While there have been many advocates of research into the potential powerful benefits that hemp-based CBD oil can offer to those suffering from such a wide range of medical complications and conditions, there have also been many detractors.

And as we turn the page to a more enlightened and more productive era of medical science research, we can expect the continued presence of many obstacles sourced from both the medical and science establishment as well is the more fundamentalist conservative movement. But the March of progress moves forth.

In the course of this March, one condition stands out as a particularly poignant example of the value of the willingness to accept the presence of a new player on the field: traumatic brain injury.

Wrapping Your Arms around Traumatic Brain Injury

To understand the impact of traumatic brain injury, one need only understand the impact of inflammation as it presents itself in the context of the brain.

Traumatic brain injury is, at its base, an inflammatory condition. Cortical tissue becomes inflamed due to the damage of altered chemistry, with consequences in the form of alterations to personality, cognitive potential, and mood.

It turns out that well over 1.5 million Americans currently suffer from the ramifications of traumatic brain injury. Where does it come from? Car accidents, contact sports, and every day activities gone wrong.

In every case, the root source of traumatic brain injury is some kind of accident of experience that leads to a blunt force trauma to the head. What happens is this: the trauma leads to the bursting of blood vessels, which in turn leads to a structural issue within the very tissue of the brain.

According to research, it isn’t the initial issue that has such widespread ramifications. In fact, it is the associated secondary effects that present the greatest obstacles for victims over the course of their lives. The brain finds itself in a difficult predicament and it reacts.

The result: chemical changes. In fact, the brain alters itself immediately afterwards and in the days that follow the initial trauma. That leads to powerful alterations in both chemistry and structure.

The Blood Brain Barrier

It’s important to understand that the body reacts to every form of attack. Whether it be trauma or pathogen, the body responds like a military establishment – scouts send out a warning cry and legions respond.

Riding to the rescue is a systemic force designed to repel whatever it is at fault for the unnatural state of affairs. However, the one exception to this rule that generally governs the body is the region known as the brain.

The brain is actually operating on its own system with its own rules and its own protocols for protection.

Dividing the space between the rest of the body and the brain is something known as “the blood brain barrier”. This barrier establishes a boundary for the normal regulatory behaviors of the body, including the actions of the immune system in the normal physiological responses to pathogens and trauma.

This has important consequences for how the brain is able to respond in situations of distress.

How Can CBD Impact Sufferers of Traumatic Brain Injury?

As we have noted, researchers have begun to study the extensive positive impacts that exposure to CBD can have on a number of different conditions impacting cognitive functionality.

Given its impact full relationship between the endocannabinoid system and its relationship with glutamate in the brain, CBD is an ideal hero character for so many different imaginable health scenarios. While in the abstract this is an interesting intellectual study, for those suffering from the impacts of traumatic brain injury, it’s a very applied notion.

In our own research, the topic of inflammation stands out as a significantly underrated notion in the medical and scientific establishment far and wide. And this is even more dramatically the case for issues of cognitive trauma.

That’s why we wish to highlight the positive research momentum that is coming to place in the conceptual relationship between traumatic brain injury and the role of CBD in impacting the health of the vitally important endocannabinoid system, with its important role in maintaining what amounts to a novel immune system lodged in the cortical structures of the brain.

There is likely a great deal of new research on the way to further ratify this conceptual connection. But at this point we can surely say as follows: CBD presents a powerful ray of hope for those battling this difficult condition.
