How CBD May Offer a Powerful Alternative for Rheumatoid Arthritis Sufferers

Published

on

CBD is a critical piece of the puzzle for so many health issues that we deal with each day. Rheumatoid arthritis is a good example.

Rheumatoid arthritis is rooted in inflammation on some level, with the source generally being related to the body’s joints.

Those hit with this terrible disease will generally experience pain in their joints, hands, and feet. While most patients dealing with rheumatoid arthritis are found between 30 and 45 years old, there are plenty of cases of children suffering from this painful malady.

Arthritis and its Victims

Rheumatoid arthritis can be such a tough one to deal with because it targets common parts of the body, attacking important components of the skeletal and muscular systems, which can drive painful and uncomfortable inflammatory responses at the tissue level.

In the end, it is this inflammation that really causes the major issues, hampering physical performance and causing great discomfort by impacting important tissues that build and maintain joints, leading to further issues for cartilaginous and osteological components of the body.

That pushes patients into a state of often complete debilitation, constricting movement and flexibility in ways that seriously undermine the quality of one’s life.

Obviously, there are both environmental and genetic factors involved, and symptoms often vary drastically for different folks. But, often times, the main issues will include fatigue, swelling, stiffness, and painful movement rooted in the joints.

Sufferers of this malady usually have obstructed sleep as well. This naturally can compound the problems related to the disease by thoroughly disrupting mental and emotional patterns and performance in everyday life.

Diagnosis

A diagnosis for RA is often not difficult. That said, one usually has to deal with a blood test to really nail it down.

Rheumatoid arthritis is far from random. As it turns out, some folks are just destined to have this issue, or at least a strong predisposition toward developing it.

For example, most people are generally between 25 and 45 years old, and roughly 75% of patients are women. In addition, there are often signals of hereditary involvement due to the large role played by family history in diagnosis.

There is also an ethnic component, with Caucasians in the Western Hemisphere having a clearly greater risk than others. Finally, weight is an issue, with obesity increasing the odds.

Affected folks will generally seek out some form of physical therapy involving heating packs, cold packs, and stretching exercises to help deal with the joint stiffness that comes with the RA package. Extra rest is also often another piece of the puzzle.

Naturally, big pharma plays its role here, too, with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs being a mainstay for treatment.

CBD Oil and Arthritis

While there is a traditional path for treatment, many unintended consequences will be brought into the equation, including potentially serious side effects. The solution to this trade-off could be CBD oil.

After all, CBD oil has become a powerful and effective treatment according to a wealth of informal and anecdotal evidence from communities of patient users.

And research is starting to back this up as well, showing that CBD helps to counter both pain and inflammation involved in RA.

As the reader may know, CBD comes from the cannabis plant and is a major part of hemp oil. It has a strong track record in dealing with both pain and inflammation, which is why doctors have already begun to recommend CBD oil for RA.

In fact, one study that was done over a decade ago dealt with RA and a one-month trial of CBD. The data was clear, showing both pain and inflammation abated and progression of the disease slowed materially. With traditional treatments coming with side effects in hand, this should be more than welcome news.

CBD and ALS

Published

on

The most important thing to understand about ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is that it is a neurodegenerative disorder that functions mostly by means of destroying motor neurons, which are brain cells associated with the module of the brain known as the motor cortex, which deals with movements of the body that are voluntary. The other associated impact of the disease, as you might expect, is that the muscles controlled by this system tends to degenerate, or atrophy.

Commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, ALS is rare, impacting only a very small percentage of people.

The central concept here is cell morbidity for cells associated with the motor cortex involuntary movement centers of the nervous system. Most people with this disease generally end up completely paralyzed within two years of initial diagnosis.

Unfortunately, we have no understanding at all about what causes the disease, and even more unfortunately, medical science has devised no treatments or cures. It is a devastating disease with a tragic outcome that is impossible to catch early – because a third of the motor cortex cells have already died by the time we know it’s there – and we don’t know what causes it or how to treat it.

Medical science is completely at sea with ALS.

What about CBD?

It’s remarkable how commonly we find that CBD is able to do things that we don’t fully understand. It almost seems like magic. ALS is another great example.

The only medication it’s been developed by the pharmaceutical industry to treat cases of ALS is Riluzole, a glutamate receptor inhibitor.

The point of the medication is to temper the speed by which neurons associate with glutamate. This helps a little bit but doesn’t provide much relief and hardly ask is a cure.

However, researchers have started to see the possibility that CBD may be able to offer even more benefits, accomplishing much of what this medication accomplishes, but also helping to reduce inflammation and oxidative stress while providing a calming influence to help individuals cope with the very difficult process of dealing with ALS.

In other words, CBD is able to do just as much is anything else medical science has found today in dealing with ALS, and also throws in some extra benefits such as stress reduction and anxiety prevention along with some reduction in neuro- inflammation.

While we don’t fully understand why this is the case, one of the main reasons appears to be the role that CB2 receptors in the endocannabinoid system play in dealing with cell death and micro glial cells.

You can think of these cells as something kind of like the brain’s version of an immune system. To understand this, it’s important to also understand that there is a layer around the brain – the blood brain barrier – that prevents normal immune system components entering the environment of the brain. So the brain has its own separate system to accomplish many of these tasks.

CBD works as an agonist for the CB2 receptors, and is therefore able to potentially push back against the death of healthy neurons, which may aid in slowing the progression of diseases like ALS. While there is still much research to be done, what we know now is promising – at least as promising as anything big Pharma has managed to produce, and without the side effects.

How CBD is Changing the Game for Alcoholism

Published

on

We have made the case that CBD can be an important tool in the toolbox for those suffering from a very wide variety of different impactful health issues.

Normally, when one thinks about a medical problem, one thinks in terms of a disease that is tangible and easy to understand as some kind of abnormal process going on within the body. That’s why it has been such a difficult road for us to understand that alcoholism is a disease.

For alcoholics, hope is often a lost concept. However, CBD may in time overcome that obstacle and become a strong ally in the battle to recover the lost souls of the ranks of the alcoholics.

To understand alcoholism one must understand how dependencies are chemical. In fact, in the case of alcoholism – as in the case of many other substance abuse disorders – the substance in question (in this case, alcohol) becomes a replacement for a substance normally found in the functional physiology of the human body.

This is the essence of the idea of “dependency”.

As we will show below, recent research points to the idea CBD may be able to intervene in these situations and aid in the process of transitioning back to a normal and healthy relationship with chemicals in the body and in the world.

Alcoholism and Addiction

Alcoholism is intimately tied into the concept of tolerance. As an alcoholic disorder develops, an individual becomes increasingly tolerant to a given amount of alcoholic exposure.

As this tolerance grows, it stands to reason that a certain amount of alcohol is necessary just to feel normal. And additional amounts of alcohol are required to feel abnormally happy in the peculiar way that an alcoholic has come to identify happiness.

This leads to a process of escalating dependency on externally provided alcohol.

The important point here is really about the symptoms of withdrawal that necessarily exhibit themselves when an individual stricken with alcoholism attempts to quit drinking.

This is actually quite a common situation. Preventable deaths related to alcoholism rank just behind those caused by heart disease and cancer.

When it comes to withdrawal, the symptoms can be awful. An individual dealing with withdrawal as an alcoholic is going to have to deal with anxiety, irritability, potential tremors, lack of energy, and possibly even palpitations of the heart.

The cost to society is enormous: possibly just shy of $250 billion given the extensive deaths, injuries, and hospitalizations that are implicated from alcoholism. As such, society has a responsibility to find new tools to deal with this terrible problem.

CBD and Alcoholism

Interestingly, CBD is able to engage with the aspect of mental experience known as contentment, which tends to reduce a feeling of craving in situations where an alcoholic has been without alcohol for some period of time. This is known as replacement.

As new research begins to coalesce around the possibility that CBD can act as a functional replacement and provide feelings of contentment for individual stricken with alcoholism, we find that a new ray of hope has emerged for those suffering from this terrible disease. After all, CBD as a treatment for alcoholism is a potent ally in a very difficult war that impacts us all.

Can Asthma Sufferers Breathe Easy with CBD?

Published

on

As we have shown in many of our prior pieces, CBD is only now just becoming better understood as an important option for both the prevention and the treatment of a variety of different and difficult medical ailments. Asthma is another good example of that trend.

When we think about asthma we generally think about its symptoms, including constriction of the airways, difficulty breathing, and excessive production of mucus.

These symptoms make life hell for those suffering from asthma. However, CBD shines upon asthma like a ray of hope at dawn because many different anecdotal and formal research studies are beginning to show the powerful impact that CBD can have for sufferers of this terrible condition.

Asthma is a life sentence – there is no known cure. Because of this, the best one can hope for is finding proactive solutions to cope with the impact that asthma has on their everyday life.

In this role of coping tool, CBD serves important functions and fits very nicely.

Getting Your Arms around Asthma

Statistically, asthma is quite common, with about 8% of people diagnosed. And that number is actually growing.

We’re not exactly sure what causes asthma, but it would appear to be a combination of heredity and life experience. About 50% of those suffering from asthma report occasional serious attacks that seriously impinge upon one’s ability to breathe normally.

Asthma also carries with it a range of symptoms including poor sleep, chest tightness, wheezing, and shortness of breath.

Environmental factors can contribute to the likelihood that one suffers from an attack, including exposure to things like smoke and dander.

The Role of Cannabinoid Receptors

In our past discussions, we have focused at length on the fact that the body has an integrated endocannabinoid system, that this system is composed of receptors, and that CBD binds to those receptors.

In short, CBD is a highly impactful element in the functionality of the endocannabinoid system.

While we don’t want to digress too much from our focus on asthma, it is important as a general statement to highlight the fact that the endocannabinoid system and its functionality ties in with the functionality of many aspects of human physiology including the proper maintenance of a number of different systems, functions, and processes that are highly integrated into the normal, proper, and balanced functionality of the body as a whole.

As another important note, for those suffering from asthma, CBD is not a substitute for your inhaler. If you’re diagnosed with asthma, and your doctor has told you that it is important for you to have your inhaler on hand at all times in case of a particularly serious asthma attack, we would urge you to unquestionably follow that advice. While CBD can be a useful tool in the toolbox as you fight against asthma and attempt to cope with having asthma in your daily life, it is not a substitute for carrying your inhaler with you at all times.

That said, there has been research that is shown that CBD can in fact play a very important role in treating chronic cases of asthma. While we don’t know the precise mechanisms involved, patients have responded generally very well to CBD treatments, and this result is causing a greater emphasis on research in this field going forward.
