Treatment Autism With CBD



As we have noted, we are finding more and more conditions every day that appeared to be amenable to CBD and CBD oil in terms of a solution as a part of a therapy or treatment process. Yet another condition to include on that list is autism.

It would appear as though the endocannabinoid system is intimately wrapped up in the pathogenesis that describes autism spectrum disorder. While very little is understood about the origin of autism as a condition in brain development and behavior, through a trial and error process, therapies, treatments, and tools have been developed over time that show traction to a greater or lesser degree. CBD oil has recently been the focus of much examination in this process as it has begun to show tremendous promise for those suffering from the effects of autism spectrum disorder.

By and large, scientists in the scientific community are split in many ways over autism. But some portion of this community has begun to believe that the endocannabinoid system may actually be a critical piece of the puzzle in understanding how autism spectrum disorder develops in an individual and manifests itself in everyday life.

Understanding Autism

Autism spectrum disorder refers to a complex soup of dysfunctional ingredients in our understanding of the normal functionality of the central nervous system. The end result is a symptomology predominated by social apathy and various forms of developmental impairment.

Generally speaking, initial emergence of symptomology appears to coincide with various stages of development found within the first three years after birth. According to the CDC, as of 2018, autism has become shockingly common, with more than one in every 60 children born exhibiting signs of autism spectrum disorder. It is also known that boys are four times more likely than girls to be diagnosed, and siblings of those with autism are as much is 10 times more likely to be diagnosed when compared with the general population.

There are enormous variations among those with autism. One of the most common ways of communicating this is through the phrase: if you have met one person with autism, you have met only one person with autism.

There has been an extraordinary increase in the incidence of autism over the past several decades. It is one of the great mysteries of science. No one understands precisely why this has been the case, although there are many theories. To some extent, some of this increase in incidence is no doubt driven by increased awareness of the existence of this disorder and therefore an increase in diagnosis.

But too much focus on this explanation tends to lead to a mistaken notion that it actually isn’t becoming more common, but instead is simply becoming recognized more and more. However, objective research has demonstrated this perspective to fall far short of describing reality. While controlling for this notion of increased diagnosis, several studies have confirmed that we are in fact seeing an increase in genuine incidence of autism.

One theory about the fundamental mechanism that drives symptomology associated with autism spectrum disorder has to do with the stimulation of neurotransmitter levels in the synaptic gaps associated with social interaction. In short, the process of stimulating a dopamine-based reward for socially interacting and identifying with others may be limited, causing less incentive to the individual to gain traction in a chronic cycling of reward-based social interaction driven by internal neural chemistry.

CBD and Autism

This suggests how CBD may be highly important in understanding the treatment and therapy landscape for how we deal with autism spectrum disorder as a society.

Specifically, the most powerful recent genetic discovery that speaks to the autism situation is its association with the notable deficiency for those with autism of a gene known as neuroligin-3. This protein, along with a closely associated relative, has been found to be essential for the formation of synapses in young brains.

This particular protein attaches to the dendrite in the postsynaptic sequence and then binds with its close relative to hold connection together. Low levels of this protein are associated with less stable neuronal connections. While this may not explain autism in general, it may be very important in the narrative of the human discovery of the pathogenesis of this disorder as well as future potential treatments, including the vast applicability potential of CBD.

However, the most important part of this discovery, along with several others, is the implication for the increasing importance of the endocannabinoid system in impacting both the development and the symptomology of autism spectrum disorder.

How Medical Marijuana Treats Pain



It has become a rather well-known fact that products of the cannabis plant are a staunch ally in the battle against chronic pain. However, for most consumers of medical marijuana for pain, it may still be a mystery as to how this is the case. In the piece below, we’re going to explore exactly that.

Cannabis: THC Versus CBD

Research into the human body and into the cannabis plant has revealed that there are cannabinoid chemicals that occur naturally in the human physiological structure. As such, when people take THC into their body, the cannabinoid receptors found in the human brain respond. The response from these receptors is a triggering of what we might call “the brain’s reward system”. This results in a reduction of pain levels throughout the body. It is also important to understand that THC happens to be a psychoactive compound: it binds to the receptors and produces a psychoactive effect in the brain that is commonly known as being “high”.

Alternatively, CBD does not produce this high. However, it does interact with the pain receptors and exerts some pain relief as well. Turning to the research over the recent years, a number of pieces of research have been released that focus specifically on the impact of marijuana on chronic states of pain. Some of this research has focused on aspects of the cannabis plant in particular, while other research focuses on the plant as a whole. At this point, the main understanding to emerge is that a holistic use of the cannabis plant may provide advantages that are not found when using only certain parts of the cannabis plant. This principle is known as “the entourage effect”.

One 2015 study that focused on the use of marijuana and cannabinoids in combination for chronic pain conditions showed that there was an enormously positive response to this treatment schedule over the course of several subject trials. This seems to have demonstrated the importance of combining both cannabinoids and marijuana in a similar treatment regime to gain the widest possible benefit. Another study, completed in 2016, showed that medical marijuana used for pain resulting from cancer led to a massive 64% decrease in the use of opioid medications. Given the importance of reducing reliance upon opioid medications for patients of cancer who may go on to survive and live otherwise long healthy lives, this is a landmark study with sweeping effects.

The Tip of the Iceberg

While this research is important, it is also important that additional research expands upon this set of opinions and data. The ability of medical marijuana to impact brain states, and therefore reduce the need for opioid painkillers for individuals experiencing major illnesses from which they may someday recover, is an enormously important societal mission. There are many opportunities for researchers to continue to expand upon this body of research.

Over time, we anticipate a number of additional revelations that continue to push the medical establishment in the direction of further support for the primary or secondary use of elements of the cannabis plant in treating major conditions including chronic pain.

Medical Marijuana for Pain: The Best Strains for the Job



While the media continues to treat cannabis-related products as a possibly controversial item in today’s culture, it is clear that medical marijuana happens to be an increasingly popular alternative path to many modern medical ailments. This is particularly the case for the treatment of pain. One of the primary reasons for this traction is public outrage that continues to grow over what is now being called “the opioid epidemic”.

Anecdotal and clinical evidence together demonstrate the fact that marijuana is capable of reducing certain types of chronic pain, including pain that happens to result from inflammation as well as nerve damage.

An Epidemic?

In the current world, pain classified as chronic impacts a greater number of individuals than do diabetes, cancer, and heart disease combined. In fact, it may surprise you to find out that chronic pain happens to be the most common cause of extended duration disability in the US today. That’s why it’s such a tragedy that many marijuana-based products actually do not yet have full approval from the FDA, because more study and research is necessary to slate them as publicly accepted cures and treatments.

The Best of the Best

To put it simply, the different types of marijuana plants really come down to the following list:

  • Cannabis Indica
  • Cannabis Sativa
  • Hybrids


In fact, there isn’t all that much research available on which strains work best for which symptoms in the field of alleviating pain. So, once again, we must return to the field of anecdotal evidence to understand how things really work. That said, it’s important for the reader to understand that the claims below are not made as medically proven facts.

One source that we have is an online survey that was completed five years ago and published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, involving 95 subjects. In that study, researchers found that subjects exposed to the study’s inputs preferred Indica strains for managing pain, for sedation, and for sleep, but preferred Sativa strains to improve energy levels and mood.

The preference for Indica for pain management particularly involved neuropathy, joint pain, non-migraine headaches, and spasticity.

More Is Needed

It should be noted that the study described above was not sufficient as far as scale and scope to push the medical establishment over the fence on medical marijuana. More research is needed involving more subjects to truly demonstrate that the conclusions found thus far are valid and important.

That said, the study is yet another indication that medical marijuana represents a revolution in the treatment of pain management and so many other medical conditions. And that revolution is going to progress gradually over time with momentum picking up as more and more studies like this are completed and their evidence is demonstrated on the world stage.

Healing Properties CBD and Addison’s Disease



Primary adrenal insufficiency, also known as Addison’s disease, is a very rare condition that impacts the adrenal cortex, resulting in a number of very difficult symptoms, including a lack of appetite, lethargy, possible adrenal crisis, loss of weight, and erratic mood.

It’s certainly true that Addison’s disease is relatively uncommon. However, CBD is an excellent resource for those suffering from this terrible condition.

Well, as you might have guessed, the endocannabinoid system is also an important part in dealing with Addison’s disease. Because this is such a critical and interconnected system throughout the body, you’ll find that it has a very complex relationships with many different sources of discomfort, malady, and disease. The case of Addison’s disease is no different.

CBD can be an important component in treating and or preventing a case of Addison’s disease because it isn’t impactful element in the functionality of the endocannabinoid system, as we have discussed in our prior pieces. In fact, much anecdotal evidence exists alongside some genuine research by the medical and scientific community to support these contentions.
